What is a Bone Anchored Hearing System (BAHS) and how does it work?

A bone conducting system consists of a sound processor and an implant. The sound processor picks up the sound, the sound is then transformed into vibrations that travels through your skull bone via the implant and directly into the inner ear where you hear them as sounds.

Who can benefit from it?

If your hearing loss is caused by changes in your outer or middle ear (conductive or mixed hearing loss), or If you have a single-sided profound hearing loss (single-sided deafness) on one ear and good hearing on the other ear, using a BAHS may improve your hearing and overall well-being. This is because it uses a different method of sound transmission to conventional hearing aids.

By wearing a BAHS in different daily situations, you can get an idea of how it can benefit your hearing, helping you make a more informed decision. Some people find this way of hearing gives them a level of sound quality they had forgotten was possible.

If you decide to proceed with the surgical procedure to have a bone anchored implant, most people enjoy even greater improvements in sound compared to the test on a softband or headband. Choosing the right sound processor is important, as not all sound processors are the same.

Surgical procedure

A safe and a well-proven surgical procedure

To experience the full benefits of BAHS, you need to have the implant fitted in the bone behind your ear. Unlike wearing the sound processor on a softband or headband, when you have the surgical procedure, there is a direct connection to the bone and the inner ear via the implant giving the best results.

If you decide to get a percutaneous implant, you may be able to have a Ponto minimally invasive procedure (MONO or MIPS). These techniques give the smallest incision possible with no sutures, minimal scarring and a shorter healing time. Such a procedure often takes less than 15 minutes and can frequently be performed under local anesthesia. If you choose an active transcutaneous implant, the surgery will be slightly more extensive, but generally takes less than an hour performed under general anesthesia.

For children, general anesthesia is recommended, and both adults and children can go home the same day.

*Not all hearing loss patients are candidates for a bone anchored hearing system (BAHS). Individual assessment and recommendation is made by your hearing care professional. Product availability and indications are subject to regulatory approval and may vary depending on the market. In the US, Canada, and Singapore, the placement of a bone anchored implant is contraindicated in children below the age of five.

Getting a BAHS is a well-proven and reliable surgical procedure.

Healing

Following the surgical procedure, you can resume your normal activities. 7-10 days after, the dressing will be removed from the implant site. Once fully healed, the sound processor is fitted by your hearing care professional and you can start to use it.
